Meet Textile designer Hafza Yusuf

Hafza Yusuf is a renowned Somali-British textile designer and art educator, known for her exceptional work in preserving and celebrating the beauty of Somali textiles and heritage. As the founder of Hafza Studio, Hafza combines her love for art with her deep connection to her Somali roots, creating stunning designs that pay homage to her culture.

Born in Somalia and raised in London, Hafza was always fascinated by the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of Somali textiles, and she wanted to explore ways to incorporate them into her artwork. Hafza began experimenting with various techniques and materials, blending traditional Somali motifs with her own unique artistic style. She found that her artwork became a way for her to express her identity as a Somali woman living in London. Through her art, Hafza aimed to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Somali culture and celebrate the rich heritage of her community.  Hafza's artwork often includes bold, bright colours and patterns found in traditional Somali textiles. She incorporates these patterns into her paintings, drawings, and prints. Through her work, Hafza aims to not only preserve the rich heritage of her community but also showcase the beauty and diversity of Somali textiles to a wider audience. Hafza's work showcases a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, creating visually striking and culturally significant artwork.

Hafza's artwork has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs both in London and internationally. Her work has received recognition for its unique blend of contemporary art and traditional techniques. Recently, Hafza's work caught the attention of the BBC, and she was featured in a news segment highlighting her community artwork. The BBC praised Hafza for her ability to use art as a form of cultural expression and representation. They highlighted how her artwork brings attention to the beauty and significance of Somali textiles, while also challenging stereotypes about Somali culture.

Apart from her work as a textile designer, Hafza is also an art educator. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and skills with others. Hafza's community artwork has also been featured in other news outlets, garnering attention and appreciation from a wider audience. Many journalists have commended her for her dedication to preserving and celebrating Somali art forms, and for using her talent to promote cultural diversity and understanding.  Hafza's community artwork has not only gained attention from the media but has also received recognition and support from the local community. Her work has been commissioned for public art projects, bringing beauty and cultural representation to the streets of London.

Through her community artwork, Hafza hopes to inspire other young artists, especially those from minority backgrounds, to embrace and celebrate their heritage in their own artistic endeavors. She believes that art has the power to connect people and bridge cultural gaps, and she wants to use her talent to create a more inclusive and diverse art world.
